Who is this training for?

  • Yoga Teachers
  • Therapists
  • Health-Care Professionals
  • On a case by case basis we do take individuals that do not fall into the above categories

What qualifications will I receive?

You will be a yoga therapist with a speciality in mental health.

As we are also cross-listed as a 200 yoga teacher training you can accredit as a yoga teacher as well through the Yoga Alliance UK, if, you are not yet a yoga teacher:

  1. For students who apply and have been teaching yoga for over 18 months you may also accredit with the British Council of Yoga Therapy as soon as you complete the course as long as you have fulfilled all of the requirements.
  2. For students who are not yoga teachers or just recently qualified you may also accredit with the British Council of Yoga Therapy, but this process will take you 18 months after the course finishes.

In both cases you are free to practice as a yoga therapist from the day you complete graduation of the 18 month training.

What can I do with the qualification?

  1. You may see private Yoga Therapy clients for stress, depression, PTSD, bipolar and post-natal depression
  2. You are qualified to teach the The Minded Institute8 week course for depression and anxiety
  3. If you are a therapist you can integrate these skills into your practice
  4. If you are a yoga teacher you will be able to create your own classes
  5. All students that wish to develop their own models will receive guidance and support from Heather Mason
  6. You will be eligible to become part of the The Minded Institutevirtual studio and teach through this portal (the portal will be live in Spring 2012)

What kind of support do I receive during the course and also once it finishes?

  1. During the training you have supervision on every module. Each student is appointed a supervisior who works with you throughout the training period. This is free of charge and a course requirement.
  2. Once the training is complete you are free to have continue to have supervision, but you pay your supervisior.

What if I have had previous mental health issues?

Some of the best therapists are individuals who tread the path of healing themselves. The wounded healer is a common motif. If you would like to discuss your personal situation with Heather Mason she is available to help you assess whether the training is appropriate for you at this time.

What if I miss a class?

We appreciate that there may be times that you are unable to attend a class however it is necessary for your graduation that you have covered all aspects of the course. Heather will be available to offer catch up sessions but these will be at an additional cost so should be kept to a minimum. For the purpose of graduation you may not miss more than 5 courses days.

How much practice time will I need to set aside outside of attending classes?

As part of our work as yoga therapists of mental health we must also attend to our own well-being. Further it is imperative that we deeply understand the practices we are offering to others, therefore, trainees are required to do 30 minutes of yoga/mindfulness practice a day. Additionally you have reading between modules and 3 practice client sessions in between each module to support your training.

Can I offer talking therapy when I graduate?

As a Yoga Therapist talking therapy is not the focus of interest and you are not qualified to offer talking therapy. We do teach inquiry and therapeutic communication skills to allow you to help students develop mindfulness. If you already hold a qualification for talking therapy such as counselling or psychotherapy you can integrate yoga therapy into your existing talking therapy practice.

How many people will be attending the training?

We take between 22-30 people per year.

I don't really know a lot about mental health - would I be able to do the course?

Yes, this is not a problem. Usually however, we require you to be either a yoga teacher or mental health worker.

I am not a yoga teacher, can I still do the training?

Yes, you do not need to be a yoga teacher to do this training, but you do need to have experience with yoga.

I’m pregnant, can I still join?

The Minded Institutedoes not teach pregnancy yoga, although it is discussed during the course. You are still invited to join but must communicate with Raquel Chinchetru, our pregnancy expert, on how to modify the poses for the three trimesters of your pregnancy.

Studying at The Minded Institute with Heather Mason has simply changed the way I teach yoga. Before I began the course I was aware of the eight limbs of yoga and the personal benefits of mindfulness and breath work within each class for my clients. Having completed the course I feel able to integrate mindfulness and breath work much more effectively into each class I teach. This course provides a thorough grounding in the science behind the yoga enabling each The Minded Institute practitioner to apply what they have learnt effectively and safely to their own clients. I cannot recommend this course enough."
